It’s been a long time coming! New Orleans welcomed Taylor Swift with open arms for The Eras Tour on October 25, 26 and 27, 2024. The city came alive with the influx of Swifties from all over the world to embrace Louisiana’s culture while getting to see one of the world’s biggest artists perform live. I may be slightly biased, but I think New Orleans was one of the most fun Eras Tour stops; everyone got in the Swiftie spirit by decorating local businesses and hosting themed events. The Caesar’s Superdome even partnered with a fan project to fashion a giant friendship bracelet that hung outside the stadium! That weekend’s energy was unmatched, and it’s one that will go down in New Orleans history.
I think there’s something to be said about the Swifties that made the weekend so festive. Since few major pop artists play in New Orleans, it’s not often that we experience the energy of a true pop fanbase. There are, however, plenty of sporting events held in the city that bring in many passionate sports fans who can get rowdy and sometimes even unsafe or unproblematic for local businesses and residents. I think that the Eras Tour weekend was sort of a breath of fresh air for many locals who got to experience the politeness and friendliness typical of Swifties.
Nonetheless, there is sort of an unexpected double standard around different fandoms. Why are predominantly female fanbases, like Swifties, looked down upon for being way too dedicated and passionate, while fans of sports teams have the exact same attitude without the stigma? Female fandoms are often trivialized for being too emotional over “frivolous” things, but sports are seen as timeless traditions with more meaning connected to them. If society justifies their devotion, music and pop culture fandoms deserve just as much celebration. It’s time to leave room for everyone to express their passions, no matter how seemingly insignificant. Just take it from me; being unafraid to express my love for Swift has allowed me to bond with other fans at the concert and make friends with other Swifties at home. Here’s to a night beyond anyone’s Wildest Dreams, and many more to come!
